With a simple change in packaging, Sealord has removed 20 tonnes of plastic from its annual waste stream. The switch from plastic wrapped trays to cardboard cartons has seen the huge reduction, which represents nine per cent of the companies annual plastic consumption.
Previously, majority of Sealord canned products were shipped in plastic wrapped trays, which have now been switched to recyclable cardboard. The change involved a significant investment by Sealord, to the tune of over $300,000 per year.
Group general manager of marketing Stu Yorston said that the change is part of the company’s drive towards sustainability, and the initiative has been well received across the supply chain.
“We’re very aware of the push from consumers for more sustainable packaging on the shelf, and our canned products meet that need very well.
He says the change isn't so visible to the consumer but it has set a good precedent to their whole-of-network approach to sustainability.
“We are very pleased with the results and we want our consumers to know that we’re doing our bit to reduce our impact on the environment.
He says the roll-out has been successful, with all product already in the market transitioning to the new cardboard cartons.
"It’s been fantastic to see the new packaging going to stores, knowing that we’ve managed to remove 20 tonnes of plastic annually from the waste stream."
Stu says Sealord has a number of other initiatives that will be phased into the market over the next 12-18 months that will continue their plastic reduction plan.
