Alfonsino is widespread in many oceans and is widely dispersed around New Zealand, at depths of 200 - 800m.
The fish has a vivid red upper body with a lighter shade of red tinted with silver on the sides. The fins and tails are also a vivid red. Alfonsino has a slender body, large eyes and a deep forked tail.
Alfonsino has white flesh with a firm texture and high oil content, making it suitable for most cooking methods. It is an ideal sashimi fish.
