Southern Blue Whiting

Micromesistius australis

Southern Blue Whiting have a slender, but fairly rounded body and are grey with a bluish tinge above, shading to silver-white below on the belly. The flesh is moist, delicate & easily flaked with a low oil content.

Southern Blue Whiting are found in the Sub-Antarctic waters of the Campbell, Pukaki and Bounty Rises, but are mainly caught south of New Zealand on the Campbell Plateau and Pukaki Rise.

As well as being managed within New Zealand’s Quota Management System, New Zealand’s Southern Blue Whiting fishery is certified as sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC).
