Smooth Oreo Dory is closely related to the zeidae or true dory family. It is also known as deep sea dory, smooth oreo, or small-spined oreo. Smooth Oreo Dory is caught around the south of New Zealand at depths of between 700 and 1,100 m (2,300 to 3,600 feet).
Smooth Oreo Dory’s white, skinless, firm fillets are moist and have good flavour. The fillets hold together well during cooking and serving, making it a versatile fish that is ideal for restaurants, caterers and retail fish bars.
Our Oreo catch numbers are determined by New Zealand’s Quota Management System, so that fisheries remain sustainable. New Zealand’s commercial fishing industry catches around 7% of the 180 million adult Oreo (adults and juveniles total approximately 3,000 million).
