Sustainable tuna in a pocket proves a hit
It's been a year since we launched our tuna pocket range.
With four great flavours packed into a convenient pouch, we knew it would be popular - so much so that we're now looking to add more flavours to the range by the end of the year.
Not only is tuna a great source of Omega 3 and a healthy form of protein, but we pride ourselves on the fact that our tuna is caught sustainably. We take very seriously the fact that we want to safeguard seafood supplies for the future and also guarantee that our products are caught using dolphin-safe methods.
To get updates on the health of fish stocks in a region and understand the latest research findings to reduce bycatch and the impact on the marine environment we use a number of independent sources to gather research on the latest developments regarding sustainable fishing practices, including the International Seafood Sustainability Foundation (ISSF).
Also, as a further commitment to our customers, Sealord's Sustainable and Equitable Tuna Procurement Policy ensures we have full traceability back to the vessel that first caught the fish, how it was caught, in what part of the Western Pacific and even the fisherman that caught it.
The story's the same with other species in our range, including hoki, hake and ling, which have all achieved Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification.
We're continually looking to expand our range of MSC certified fish - and are expecting an announcement soon regarding our orange roughy.
At present for our tuna, there are not enough boats certified by MSC to supply our range so that it could carry the eco label. However, through the procedures we’ve undertaken and our ardent commitment to sustainability you can be confident that Sealord tuna is from healthy, sustainable sources and with a full traceability of supply.
We've always taken great pride in being one step ahead in terms of protecting the fisheries of the future, for instance in 2013 we were the first New Zealand company to sign the World Wildlife Fund's Tuna Conservation Pledge, making a commitment to reducing bycatch to below 1%, by only sourcing tuna that had been caught without the use of Fish Aggregating Devices.
Our customers certainly seem to have responded positively to our guarantee, which is another reason why the tuna pouch range has become such a hit. Watch this space for news on more exciting flavours - they'll be coming to a store near you, just to make mealtimes a little bit easier and a lot more delicious.
