Otakou crew help in rescue
The Otakou crew were praised highly recently for their quick actions in helping rescue an injured sailor.
A 70-year-old man was sailing alone and had been struck on the head by the boom of his 10m yacht. He was 20 km off the Wairarapa coast when the mayday call went out.
The Rescue Coordination Centre NZ (RCCNZ) managed the rescue operation and the Otakou responded immediately.
The crew used the rescue boat to bring the sailor on board and then the Westpac Rescue helicopter from Wellington lowered a paramedic and a Maritime Police officer with sailing experience on to the vessel. The injured man was winched to safety and then, with help from the Otakou crew, the Maritime Police officer boarded the yacht Solaise.
“The prompt actions of the Otakou crew in retrieving the man from his yacht and communicating with the helicopter made the winch operation safer," says RCCNZ search and rescue mission coordinator Chris Wilson.
