Fifty percent of Sealord is owned by the Maori people of New Zealand and our other shareholder is the Japanese company Nippon Suisan (Nissui) which has a 100 year history in the fishing industry and interests around the globe.
Our Maori ownership
In 1992 with the support of the New Zealand government, the Treaty of Waitangi Fisheries Commission acquired half of our company that had grown from our ancestral land and waters, in a Trust for New Zealand Maori.
This trust became known as Te Ohu Kai Moana and was established so guardianship of fishing resources would be preserved for all Maori, now and in the future.
By 2004 Sealord had become a partnership between Maori and Nippon Suisan. Te Ohu Kai Moana entrusted the guardianship of its half share of Sealord to Aotearoa Fisheries Limtied (AFL).
